N6 rooted and TWRP installed. Some ROM and kernel questions

I want to install a custom ROM and kernel on a rooted M N6. Can I simply install any custom ROM and kernel that's android M? I'm looking for a ROM kernel combo that will let me tweak colors for this gorgeous screen. Thanks.
